April is Credit Union Youth Month, and Horizon Credit Union is inviting families to Explore the World of Money together.
Learning about money should feel empowering and approachable. This month focuses on helping kids build smart money habits through simple, engaging activities that encourage curiosity, confidence, and meaningful family conversations. With Explore the World of Money, saving becomes a shared experience that parents and kids can enjoy together.
What Kids Can Explore
- Choose a savings goal and talk about why it matters
- Track progress and see how small steps add up
- Learn smart saving habits through fun, age-appropriate activities
- Build confidence by making thoughtful money choices
The materials are designed to fit easily into everyday life and grow with your child, whether they are just starting to save or working toward a bigger goal.
How Families Can Get Involved
Parents and caregivers play an important role in shaping healthy money habits. Families are encouraged to:
- Open or use a youth savings account
- Set a savings goal together
- Use everyday moments to talk about money choices
- Explore the activities at a pace that works for your family
Starting early helps kids develop confidence, responsibility, and lifelong saving habits.
Youth and Teen Sweepstakes for an HCU Share Certificate
Encourage your children to make a $5 deposit into their account and they will be entered into a drawing to win a personalized CD with a $70 deposit from HCU! The winners will be picked monthly for the next 12 months.
For the older kids, teens are encouraged to participate and they will be entered into a drawing for a scholarship of $500 in a 12-month CD. The winners will be picked at the end of each quarter:
Ways to Enter:
- $50 or more in net deposits during the quarter
- New checking account with debit card
- Open new CD of $50 or more
- Submit essay

- The Power of Saving Early: Why starting a savings account as a teenager sets you up for long-term success. April 1st-June 30th.
- Budgeting 101: How creating a budget helps prioritize spending and avoid debt. July 1st-September 30th.
- Wants vs. Needs: Exploring the psychology of spending and distinguishing between necessities and luxuries. October 1st-December 31st.
- The Importance of Financial Literacy: How learning about money early can prevent future financial stress. January 1st-March31st.
